Pony death sparks speed campaign

Heart breaking picture of a disconsolate foal should have sufficient impact to ensure success of speed reduction campaign.

A campaign group said releasing the picture was 'justified'
Campaigners for a lower speed limit in the New Forest have released a graphic image of a dead pony trying to be roused by its foal.

The mare had its back broken when it was hit by a car near Brokenhurst. Landowners claim road accidents are killing three animals every two weeks.

The South Weirs Action Group for Safety (Swags) want the 40mph limit reduced to 30mph across the whole forest.

Hampshire County Council have agreed to investigate the issues raised.

There are about 3,000 ponies in the forest.

They are owned by landowners who have the right to allow their animals to roam.

Swags say they have seen 40 similar incidents on the same stretch of road in the last five years.

Waterley, Brockenhurst, New Forest.

Waterley, Brockenhurst, New Forest.

Waterley, my lovely holiday cottage in the New Forest has won a Gold Award from Enjoy England for "exceptional quality of accommodation and customer service." I'm absolutely chuffed to bits and display my certificate with pride. We are having a really busy summer with lots of repeat bookings. Hooray!

I've blogged this via IE8 - I thought I may contribute more regularly but the new feature in IE8 called Accelerator is very limited for Blogger - I don't think I can incorporate pictures directly - to add this shot I had to blog text first, upload, then edit to add pics - a bit convoluted to say the least. :-( But I'll carry on fiddling.

Ada Lovelace

While mooching round BBC's Radio 4 website I discovered that yesterday was Ada Lovelace Day. She wrote the world's first computer programmes for Charles Babagage's Analytical Engine. The day was used as a celebration of women in technology.
